Southern School of Martial Arts and Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo is following and even exceeding all the CDC Covid 19 guidelines to make training as safe as it can be. At Southern School of Martial Arts students learn specialized self defense and reality based martial arts. We are a non sport self defense martial arts school that forces on the self defense aspect of martial arts. This is a great art for those children who are being bullied at school or for those adults wanting to learn effective self defense. Our martial art is based in Classic Ju-Jitsu with a blend of Ninjutsu, Aikido, Judo, Karate, Eskrima and Kali. It is a very dynamic martial art style that offers much more than just Karate or Tae Kwon Do. There are striking techniques like punching and kicking that are very similar to Tae Kwon Do and Karate. But that is where the similarities stop. We also teach grappling techniques both standing and on the ground, throwing techniques, various joint locks, weapons techniques, weapon disarms and retention, techniques for police and military and specialty classes for those who want private training. We also have Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo in the same building that teaches the traditional art of the Bujinkan. This is Ninjutsu the historical martial art of the Ninja. This art teaches weapons, striking and grappling with stealth and outdoor training. We also teach select techniques and aspects of several other martial arts that Soke has experience with, these are Russian Martial Arts, Krav Maga and JKD. If you want more than just Karate or Tae Kwon Do please check us out. We have classes for children ages 3 to 5 called Little Ninja, classes for children ages 6 to 12 called Kobushi-Do "The Little Warrior Way" and classes for teens and adults Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu and Bujinkan Ninjutsu. We are now accepting students at both the McGee's Crossroads, NC. location and for the new location coming to the Clayton area soon. Head InstructorGrandmaster 10th degree black belt and Soke of Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu, Shidoshi 5th degree black belt Ninjutsu Bujinakn Ninp/Budo Taijutsu, 4th degree black belt Judo and 3rd degree black belt Aikido. I also have a black belt or higher equivalent of experience in Karate, JKD, Escrima and Kali. I’ve been active in Martial Arts for 40 years. I studied Ju-Jitsu, Aikido, Judo, and Karate under Grandmaster, Soke John H. Casarez, Founder of Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu for the past 40 years. Soke Casarez also invited a few guest instructors at his school early in my training. Bob Frazier taught some Aikido and Okinawan Karate techniques. Robert “Bob” Edwards taught traditional Judo techniques and Lester Cohen and his student Mike Parsons taught Filipino martial arts and JKD. This is where I obtained the roots of my Filipino and JKD experience. I have acquired even more Filipino and JKD experience while training at the World Head of Family Sokeship Council seminars over the last 28 years. I have gained knowledge and experience from many other styles of Martial Arts as well while training at various WHFSC seminars over the last 28 years. Some of the notable martial arts styles I’ve trained in are: Filipino Martial Arts, Aikido, Karate, Judo, Kung Fu, Ninjutsu, Muay Tai, Silat, Systema, (Russian Martial Arts), JKD, Aiki-Jujutsu, While training in the 1980’s Soke Casarez also taught some Ninjutsu techniques in his class after training some with Stephen K. Hayes. I officially started training in Bujinkan Ninjutsu in 1996 under Shihan Richard J. Van Donk, 15th Dan (American Bujinkan Dojo/IBDA) of Middletown, CA. I briefly changed Ninjutsu instructors in 2006 and I trained under Shihan Ed “Papasan” Martin, 15th Dan in Bujinkan Ninjutsu from McCungie, PA. I studied with him for about 3 years and then went back to Shihan Richard J. Van Donk in 2009. Shihan Richard Van Donk and the late Shihan Ed Martin are both long time students of Masaaki Hatsumi, 34th Soke of Ninjutsu, (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu) from Japan. I studied for about 2 years in Roppo-Kai Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jutsu from instructors of Okamoto Sensei from Japan. In May 2006 I attended his USA seminar in Charlotte, NC. I lived in Southeast Ohio from the time of my birth until April of 1994 when I moved to the Raleigh North Carolina area. I started private tutoring a few students from 1994 through 1996. On May 26, 1996 I founded my own martial arts school, Southern School of Martial Arts in Willow Springs, NC. Since then the school has been in several locations throughout Wake and Johnston counties. Currently we’re located in McGee’s Crossroads, NC. at I-40 and Exit 319. I founded North Carolina’s Division of Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu in 1994. Southern School of Martial Arts was the first and only school in North Carolina that taught Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu. In October of 2001 I researched, developed and created a martial arts system just for children called Kobushi-Do (The Little Warrior Way). This is my personal children’s Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu system. In March of 2003 I created my own Bujinkan Ninjutsu school, Rivers Edge Bujinkan Dojo. I then officially offered classes in Ninjutsu (Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu). I received my Shidoshi-Ho/Shidoshi-Kai. In 2002 and Shidoshi in 2019. In 2006 I was named Soke (Head of System) of the Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu system by Founder, Soke John Casarez. On December 31st, 2018, I was promoted to 10th degree black belt in August 2019 and became Soke of Manabi-Masho Ju-Jitsu.
